A NEW GENERATION RISES UP

Joshua 1:1 After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant,  2 “Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the people of Israel.

A new chapter is about to be written.  A powerful transition is about to take place.

Moses— “Drawn Out”            Hebrew Prophet, Lawgiver of Israel.  Moses is seen as a type of Christ because he delivers the Hebrews from bondage.

Moses led his flock to Horeb, the mountain of God  Exodus 3:2 And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. 3 And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” 4 When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” 5 Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” 6 And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

Joshua— “Yahweh is Salvation”  A Hebrew equivalent from the Greek, Jesus (Yeshua-Salvation) Also a type of Christ, Joshua led the people of Israel into the possession of their inheritance—The Promised Land.  Christ in the same way leads us into the possession of eternal life.

FIRST TRANSITION:  Known at this point as only Moses’ assistant, Joshua encounters the Lord and is given specific instructions as to how he would lead God’s people.

1.      Arise, go over this Jordan.

“arise” to rise, become powerful, come on the scene

This is not the first time the Hebrews had been to this place.  The previous generation had opportunity to inherit the land, but they refused and God declared they would die in the wilderness. That generation passed along with Moses.  Now Joshua’s generation is about to inherit the promises made to their fathers.

2.      My promise to Moses is yours. “Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you.” Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.

ILL. Holy Ground

SECOND TRANSITION:  Up to this point the people had been following the miracles of God…now the miracles would be following them as they obeyed and stepped out in faith.

·        Moses was not there to part the waters…instead the feet of the priest stepping into the water cause the waters to rise up in a heap

·        Walls of Jericho fell as they marched around the city seven times.

·        Joshua asked the LORD to cause the sun to stand still

THIRD TRANSITION: Success would be theirs through faith and obedience to the commandments of God.

3.      Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers.

4.      Be strong and very courageous, being careful to do all the law that Moses My servant commanded you.

“courage”- to be strong, alert, courageous, brave, bold, to be determined, to make oneself alert, to strengthen oneself, persist in…Strength is a component of courage, but courage is not necessarily a part of strength…

COURAGE MEANS HAVING THE STRENGTH TO DO SOMETHING IN SPITE OF YOUR FEARS!

5.      Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.

6.      This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night so that you may be careful to do all that is written in it.

Success would be theirs through following and MEDITATING on the Law of God.

“meditate”- utter, muse, meditate, speak…root word whisper

You think about something by pondering it in your mind.   When you become totally committed to trusting and living God’s Word there won’t be anything or anyone who can keep you quiet about it.

NLT “Study this Book of Instruction continually. . .”

The Message “And don't for a minute let this Book of The Revelation be out of mind. . .”

CEV “Never stop reading the Book of the Law he gave you. . .”

Putting the Word to action within us is a continual process.  It is to be an integral part of our talk and our walk.

KJV  “. . .thou shalt meditate therein day and night. . .”

Psalm 1:2 2But his delight is in the law of the LORD,  And in His law he meditates day and night.  3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.

Matthew 12:34 “. . .For out of the fullness (the overflow, the superabundance) of the heart the mouth speaks.”

FOURTH TRANSITION: How does this apply to my life?

In many ways. . .the generation of Joshua was a type and shadow of the church today.  God is calling us to leave our traditions and move into the fullness and promises of His Word.

THREE QUESTIONS:

Do you want to be prosperous?  To have good success in everything you do?

Are you following the directions given to help you in Joshua 1:8?

Are you doing what God instructed you to do?

THEN EXPECT THESE RESULTS:

First, and increase in courage.  Trust in the Lord with all your heartProverbs 3:5, 6; Walk by faith and …

2 Corinthians 5:7

Second, an increase in boldness.

2 Corinthians 3:12 Since this new way gives us such confidence, we can be very bold.

Hebrews 10:19 And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven's Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus.

Third, an increase in influence.  Joseph, Daniel, Nehemiah all gained positions of authority because they were not willing to compromise their life or what they believed.

Fourth, and increase in favor.

Acts 2:46,47  United in purpose, they went to the Temple every day, ate at each other's homes, and shared their food with glad and humble hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.

Luke 2:52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man

Fifth, living and leading in a way that is visible and attainable

Psalm 78: 4-6 We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders.
