Exodus 20:13 You shall not murder.

Law- A life for a life

Yahweh’s purpose for Cities of refuge:  To prevent the shedding of innocent blood.

Genesis 4:9  Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?” 10And the Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground. 11And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”

“Refuge”-a place of shelter, safety, or protection.

Yahweh is our refuge

Psalm 91:2: 18:2; 62:7

He has prepared a place of refuge.

Joshua 20:1-6”

“Manslayer”-

“Avenger of blood”-

Justice is Yahweh’s nature.

Proverbs 21:15 When justice is done it brings joy to the righteous, and terror to the evildoer.

Illustration: Justice is in our DNA- King David; 2 Samuel12:1-14

The Rabbi’s studying the Law of Moses found 613 truth’s to be kept; God condensed that down to three;

SERIES 2020 VISION- "CHURCH AND THE NEXT GENERATION"

CHURCH AND THE NEXT GENERATION

Psalm 145:4 One generation shall praise Your works to another, And shall declare Your mighty acts.

1 Corinthians 13:13 Three things will last forever: faith, hope, and love, but the greatest of these is love.

Proverbs 29:18 Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law.

Matthew 24:12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.

ILL. Sustainable church

“sustainable”- able to be maintained or kept going, as an action or process:

You hear a lot of talk about “going green”; “sustainable energy” all of which speaks of the future…

·        Home church

·        Echurch

·        No church

Matthew 16:18 … I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.

Sustainable…. What Jesus established over 2000 years ago is still growing every day!   HIS CHURCH WAS BUILT ON THREE ELEMENTS… faith, hope, love

Faith in God …. Hope through eternal life … Love that comes only through relationship with the Father.

JESUS MODELED NEXT GENERATION MINISTRY

·        Invited 12 men to “follow”, varied occupations and backgrounds

·        Taught them about the Kingdom of God

·        Challenged them to become disciples and do ministry with Him

·        Released them to minister (sent them out)

·        Prepared them to carry on ministry in His absence

JESUS MET PEOPLE WHERE THEY WERE

·        Geographically

·        Spiritually

·        Physically

·        Emotionally

JESUS SPOKE THE LANGUAGE OF THE CULTURE

Mark 4:24 He taught them by telling many stories in the form of parables,

“parable” a comparison; use of a story to reveal a hidden truth

JESUS LOVED INSTEAD OF LECTURING

·        Religious—

·        Spectator—

·        One being condemned—

John 8:10, Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”

In this story Jesus was writing something in the dirt…

20/20 VISION PART TWO, "NEXT GENERATION"

SERIES- 20 / 20 VISION, PART TWO-JOSHUA  GENERATION (NEXT GENERATION)

Psalm 78: 4 We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders.

America’s Generations—

1901-1926       GI Generation

1925-1945       Silent Generation

1946-1964       Baby Boomers

1965-1979       Generation X

1980-2000       Generation Y (Millenials)-detached from institutions and linked through social media

2000-Present   Generation Z or (Young Millenials) –iY generation (iPhone, iPad, iTunes, iPods, iMessaging)

A NEW GENERATION RISES UP

Joshua 1:1 After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant,  2 “Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the people of Israel.

A new chapter is about to be written.  A powerful transition is about to take place.

Moses— “Drawn Out”            Hebrew Prophet, Lawgiver of Israel.  Moses is seen as a type of Christ because he delivers the Hebrews from bondage.

Moses led his flock to Horeb, the mountain of God  Exodus 3:2 And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. 3 And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” 4 When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” 5 Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” 6 And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

Joshua— “Yahweh is Salvation”  A Hebrew equivalent from the Greek, Jesus (Yeshua-Salvation) Also a type of Christ, Joshua led the people of Israel into the possession of their inheritance—The Promised Land.  Christ in the same way leads us into the possession of eternal life.

FIRST TRANSITION:  Known at this point as only Moses’ assistant, Joshua encounters the Lord and is given specific instructions as to how he would lead God’s people.

1.      Arise, go over this Jordan.

“arise” to rise, become powerful, come on the scene

This is not the first time the Hebrews had been to this place.  The previous generation had opportunity to inherit the land, but they refused and God declared they would die in the wilderness. That generation passed along with Moses.  Now Joshua’s generation is about to inherit the promises made to their fathers.

2.      My promise to Moses is yours. “Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you.” Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.

ILL. Holy Ground

SECOND TRANSITION:  Up to this point the people had been following the miracles of God…now the miracles would be following them as they obeyed and stepped out in faith.

·        Moses was not there to part the waters…instead the feet of the priest stepping into the water cause the waters to rise up in a heap

·        Walls of Jericho fell as they marched around the city seven times.

·        Joshua asked the LORD to cause the sun to stand still

THIRD TRANSITION: Success would be theirs through faith and obedience to the commandments of God.

3.      Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers.

4.      Be strong and very courageous, being careful to do all the law that Moses My servant commanded you.

“courage”- to be strong, alert, courageous, brave, bold, to be determined, to make oneself alert, to strengthen oneself, persist in…Strength is a component of courage, but courage is not necessarily a part of strength…

COURAGE MEANS HAVING THE STRENGTH TO DO SOMETHING IN SPITE OF YOUR FEARS!

5.      Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.

6.      This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night so that you may be careful to do all that is written in it.

Success would be theirs through following and MEDITATING on the Law of God.

“meditate”- utter, muse, meditate, speak…root word whisper

You think about something by pondering it in your mind.   When you become totally committed to trusting and living God’s Word there won’t be anything or anyone who can keep you quiet about it.

NLT “Study this Book of Instruction continually. . .”

The Message “And don't for a minute let this Book of The Revelation be out of mind. . .”

CEV “Never stop reading the Book of the Law he gave you. . .”

Putting the Word to action within us is a continual process.  It is to be an integral part of our talk and our walk.

KJV  “. . .thou shalt meditate therein day and night. . .”

Psalm 1:2 2But his delight is in the law of the LORD,  And in His law he meditates day and night.  3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.

Matthew 12:34 “. . .For out of the fullness (the overflow, the superabundance) of the heart the mouth speaks.”

FOURTH TRANSITION: How does this apply to my life?

In many ways. . .the generation of Joshua was a type and shadow of the church today.  God is calling us to leave our traditions and move into the fullness and promises of His Word.

THREE QUESTIONS:

Do you want to be prosperous?  To have good success in everything you do?

Are you following the directions given to help you in Joshua 1:8?

Are you doing what God instructed you to do?

THEN EXPECT THESE RESULTS:

First, and increase in courage.  Trust in the Lord with all your heartProverbs 3:5, 6; Walk by faith and …

2 Corinthians 5:7

Second, an increase in boldness.

2 Corinthians 3:12 Since this new way gives us such confidence, we can be very bold.

Hebrews 10:19 And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven's Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus.

Third, an increase in influence.  Joseph, Daniel, Nehemiah all gained positions of authority because they were not willing to compromise their life or what they believed.

Fourth, and increase in favor.

Acts 2:46,47  United in purpose, they went to the Temple every day, ate at each other's homes, and shared their food with glad and humble hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.

Luke 2:52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man

Fifth, living and leading in a way that is visible and attainable

Psalm 78: 4-6 We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders.

20/20 VISION- "HOW IS YOUR SIGHT?"

20/20 VISION-HOW IS YOUR SIGHT?

2 Peter 1:3-11

ILL. Way we see things:

See through rose colored glasses—cheerful to the point of being overly optimistic

Glass half full / Glass half empty

Blinders on-not be able to accept what is happening around you…ability to block out distractions

Eyes wide open-totally aware of what is going on

Short-sighted—lacking foresight or discernment (ability to imagine or anticipate things in the future)

shortsighted- “muópazó”- I blink (closing the eyes); see dimly or see only what is near

forgetting-a phase of being short-sighted

myopia--Ophthalmology. a condition of the eye in which parallel rays are focused in front of the retina, objects being seen distinctly only when near to the eye; nearsightedness

lack of foresight or discernment; obtuseness.

narrow-mindedness; intolerance.

hyperopia-

inability to see near objects clearly because the images received by the eye are focused behind the retina; long-sightedness (far-sightedness)

APPLY TO:

Nation—Concerning our nation I believe we should be a realist (One who is inclined to literal truth and pragmatism.) A pragmatist looks at a situation and observes the facts in a no non-sense fashion in order to solve a problem(s).

The problems we face in our nation are real and have to have real answers.

Many of these problems cannot be fixed with legislation, i.e morality

Putting 93 million people back to work is a real problem. Something the government has never been good at doing.

Defending our nation from terrorism is a real problem. Something our government HAS to be good at.

Feeding the poor, providing for the widow, defending the fatherless (all social issues).  God did not create government to solve these issues…He created the body of Christ.

We can view these things in several ways: We can look at the condition of our nation through rose colored glasses, believe that everything is going to work out in the end…We can put our blinders on and just ignore everything going on around us…OR we can see the situation for what it is with eyes wide open and begin to contribute solutions to the many problems we face.  WE ALL HAVE A STAKE IN HELPING TO MAKE OUR NATION GREAT AGAIN.

1.      PRAY—“Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.” (Eph.6:18)

2.      BE RESPONSIBLE

3.      LOOK BEYOND YOUR OWN NEED

INDIVIDUALS—

10 So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Do these things, and you will never fall away. 11Then God will give you a grand entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

GOD HAS SUPPLIED ALL YOU NEED FOR A GODLY LIFE

2 Peter 1:3-11 By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. 4 And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.

GOD’S PROMISES CAN BE YOURS

5 In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises.

Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence,

and moral excellence with knowledge,

and knowledge with self-control,

and self-control with patient endurance,

and patient endurance with godliness,

and godliness with brotherly affection,

and brotherly affection with love for everyone.

8The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins.

ILL. NEARSIGHTED (myopic) BASEBALL PLAYER  (personal experience)

God wants well-rounded individuals in His family, those who understand His way of life and co-operate with the rest of the family, not extremists who may be right in their knowledge but wrong in their overall viewpoint.

CHURCH—

John 8:12 Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”

Mt. 5:14“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

2017 Vision for NGC

Become a Next Generation Church

ENGAGE-(V) to occupy the attention or efforts of (a person or persons)

Luke 19:13 Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’
