2 Peter 1:3-11

ILL. Way we see things:

See through rose colored glasses—cheerful to the point of being overly optimistic

Glass half full / Glass half empty

Blinders on-not be able to accept what is happening around you…ability to block out distractions

Eyes wide open-totally aware of what is going on

Short-sighted—lacking foresight or discernment (ability to imagine or anticipate things in the future)

shortsighted- “muópazó”- I blink (closing the eyes); see dimly or see only what is near

forgetting-a phase of being short-sighted

myopia--Ophthalmology. a condition of the eye in which parallel rays are focused in front of the retina, objects being seen distinctly only when near to the eye; nearsightedness

lack of foresight or discernment; obtuseness.

narrow-mindedness; intolerance.

inability to see near objects clearly because the images received by the eye are focused behind the retina; long-sightedness (far-sightedness)

Nation—Concerning our nation I believe we should be a realist (One who is inclined to literal truth and pragmatism.) A pragmatist looks at a situation and observes the facts in a no non-sense fashion in order to solve a problem(s).

The problems we face in our nation are real and have to have real answers.

Many of these problems cannot be fixed with legislation, i.e morality

Putting 93 million people back to work is a real problem. Something the government has never been good at doing.

Defending our nation from terrorism is a real problem. Something our government HAS to be good at.

Feeding the poor, providing for the widow, defending the fatherless (all social issues).  God did not create government to solve these issues…He created the body of Christ.

We can view these things in several ways: We can look at the condition of our nation through rose colored glasses, believe that everything is going to work out in the end…We can put our blinders on and just ignore everything going on around us…OR we can see the situation for what it is with eyes wide open and begin to contribute solutions to the many problems we face.  WE ALL HAVE A STAKE IN HELPING TO MAKE OUR NATION GREAT AGAIN.

1.      PRAY—“Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.” (Eph.6:18)

10 So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Do these things, and you will never fall away. 11Then God will give you a grand entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 1:3-11 By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. 4 And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.

5 In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises.

Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence,

and moral excellence with knowledge,

and knowledge with self-control,

and self-control with patient endurance,

and patient endurance with godliness,

and godliness with brotherly affection,

and brotherly affection with love for everyone.

8The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins.

ILL. NEARSIGHTED (myopic) BASEBALL PLAYER  (personal experience)

God wants well-rounded individuals in His family, those who understand His way of life and co-operate with the rest of the family, not extremists who may be right in their knowledge but wrong in their overall viewpoint.

John 8:12 Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”

Mt. 5:14“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
